Amazon.co.uk Review If there's one thing that Tess Gerritsen's Body Double categorically proves, it's that there are few writers (on either side of the Atlantic) as consistent as her in turning out pungent and atmospheric thrillers, each as finely honed as the last. The Surgeon, with its ritualistic serial killer apparently returning from the dead to menace the surgeon he blamed for his death, marked out Gerritsen's unsettling territory with immense assurance: here was a writer for whom there were few taboos when it came to disturbing the reader. Similarly, The Apprentice gleaned considerable acclaim for its chilling portrait of a killer utilising his medical knowledge in unspeakable fashion. Body Double has all the characteristic Gerritsen imagination and innovation (despite a title that has seen service a little too often); here, Detective Jane Rizzoli has the feeling that she is gazing at her doppelganger when she looks at the body of Boston pathologist Dr Maura Isles stretched out on the slab that was her own work surface. Maura Isles has Jane's physical appearance, birth date, and even blood type. And when tests reveal that the women are twin sisters, Jane is plunged into a dangerous mystery, travelling to Maine where she must investigate the identity of a mother she never knew. And, all the while, a savage murderer is indulging in nationwide slaughter. Gerritsen has created some controversy with her readiness to gaze into the darker recesses of human psychopathology, and this book (like its predecessors) is not for the squeamish. But those seeking powerful and trenchant crime writing need not hesitate. Jane Rizzoli, too, is a strongly characterised protagonist. --Barry Forshaw

Not her best June 26, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
After following Gerritsens Isles and Rizzoli series and being consistently impressed I have to admit that this 4th entry is a bit of a let down. Don't get me wrong, it is a good book. I enjoy reading about the two leading ladies in every one of Gerritsens books and feel they both progress in each. And theres also a good mix of new characters in Body Double. However I found some parts slightly unbelievable and farfetched which often seems the case with Tess' books. And when i'm reading a crime book I want it to seem believable that this could really be happening and in this I felt parts of it were not. However it is still an enjoyable read, Tess really is right at the top of her game and there's not many better writers in the genre out there.
Good thriller February 26, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm not usually into thrillers but this is one of the better ones. Very exciting and well written for its genre. I still much prefer historical fiction though!
Very Good! February 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the fourth book in the Patholigist Dr. Maura Isles/Detective Jane Rizzoli series, and stands up pretty well in comparision with the other three novels.
In this one, Dr. Maura Isles has to go deep into her past, and find hidden, shocking truths, about her family in order to solve a modern day crime.
As always, the characters of Maura Isles and Jane Rizzoli are engaging, and the plot in this book had quite a few twists in it, too. There was frequently something new being discovered, or an event happening, in the storyline, that would make you want to read on further.
Excellent as always December 21, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I discovered Tess Gerritsen just as my enthusiasm for Patricia Cornwell was waning. Not only did I find an author who hooked me just as Cornwells early Scarpetta books did but I think I might actually have found an author who can tell a tale better than Cornwell. I took a reviewer on Amazon's advice and read the Jane Rizzoli series from the beginning and have loved every installment so far from `The Surgeon' to 'The Apprentice', 'The Sinner' and now 'Body Double'.....although I should stress that it's not necessary to read the books in sequence.
In Body Double the plot centers on a mystery surrounding Medical Examiner Dr Maura Isles who finds herself face to face with a twin she never knew she had. `Dark, sinister and well-crafted' are some of the comments that have been used to describe Body Double and I can't think of any better way of explaining the plot and story. But then that's no more than we've come to expect from Tess Gerritsen.
I've also read `Vanish' - the next in the series after Body Double and it too is fantastic. So if you're in the market for a fantastic thriller writer who'll keep you up till the early hours flipping pages then get you're plastic out and order the whole series!
