2 out of 5 stars Horrifyingly disturbing   October 15, 2008
Without doubt the most disturbing books ive ever read. Firstly, the book is very fast paced, and Mo has conjured up a plot that makes you turn the page. In terms of appreciating her skill at story telling, she is awesome. You HAVE TO keep reading. She wastes no times on superficial details that bog down a lot of thrillers. Its an incredible plot, full of twists and red herrings and personally i think Jack Caffrey is a brilliant creation.
However, the storyline in this book makes Birdman (which stretched the boundries of what i am prepared to read in the name of entertainment) look like a fairytale. The story is graphically disgusting, horrifyingly peverse and some moments in the book made me feel physically sick. But i had to keep reading hoping for some let up and a good finale. Forget it, Mo never lets up. She never gives you room to breath. There are no light hearted moments and the book is painfully one dimensional. Its dark, dark, dark and i like other reviewers felt depressed and upset once i had finished it. I cant stop thinking about it - yes i finished in a day as she is a fabulous writer, but the storyline is just too much. She leaves NOTHING to the imagination, and when your talking about peadophiles, some things id really rather not know.
After Birdman, i gave this a shot as i thought Birdman was an extreme creation. This is far nastier, and im a little disappointed that i wont be reading anymore. I feel rather shallow, getting enjoyment out of a book which has no "niceness" about it. Its not non-fiction which i can empathise with, this is simply graphically horrendous and i felt peverse reading it. And i agree with others, although its crime fiction, this is horror, and it does take you to the edge of acceptable reading material.
However, Mo Hayder is a genius in terms of narrative and plotting. I just wish she's dampen down the obscene storylines as i would have liked to have read more of her books.

1 out of 5 stars Think very carefully before you read this book   June 12, 2008

I thought I was prepared for this book after reading birdman, and its true it is well written and so on. I couldn't finish it however. I have two small boys and the subject matter sickened me to my stomach. I challenge the appropriateness of using extreme sexual and violent abuse of small boys as entertainment. I also think that this kind of writing would give susceptible people ideas. I think this book is irresponsible and frankly gives us glimpses into a mind (ie the author's) that scares me very much. I'm very glad she's not my mother and that I don't know her and never will. I wonder what she thinks she is achieving?

5 out of 5 stars Another brilliant offering   April 5, 2008
I read this book after reading Birdman. It is another superb offering by this author and features DI Caffery once again. This book is quite disturbing but it's another great British crime read. It's a definate page turner and will make you want to read more and more.

5 out of 5 stars Unputdownable   March 24, 2008
This is an absolutely fantastic read and is the second in the DI Jack Caffrey books; the first one being Birdman. We get to find out what happened to Ewan, Jack's brother and it is a most shocking and absorbing story. I have to say Jack is a wonderful copper but did miss some vital clues along the way: some of the time I was shouting at the book to tell him to listen!! Hugely enjoyable.
