Amazon.co.uk Review Diarmuid Gavin came to popular attention as the gardening half of the design team in the television series Home Front, with Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen (Ginger to Gavin's Fred). Home Front in the Garden sees him on his own, showcasing his striking architectural garden fantasies. It would be safe to say that these tend to the extravagant end of the garden spectrum, a long way from the flower-filled paradises of Vita Sackville-West or Rosemary Verey. Gavin confesses to being inspired by, among other influences, the sets of old Star Trek episodes. This is postmodernist gardening with a vengeance. A long, narrow garden is transversely divided by a huge steel shark's fin; a serpentine hill, studded with lights, extends the length of another space, ending in a mound that conceals a cave; a glass cube room hovers above a pool surrounded by a rainforest garden of ferns and other flowerless exotics. Gavin provides a comprehensive outline of the principles underlying his approach and explores in some depth the properties of the materials, some of them new, some merely new to the garden, which allow him to express with such vividness the personalities and lifestyles of his patrons. Nor does he neglect plants. A number of detailed case-studies show his ideas and theories at work. This is powerfully inspirational gardening, though definitely not for the nervous. --Robin Davidson

Awe inspiring April 2, 2003 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I found the book (and the series) awe-inspiring. I just sat there with my mouth open - this is definately not Alan Titchmarsh in Ground Force. Fantastic coffee table book, but I relly can't see may people actually having the courage or persistance to pull off anything as stunning as these designs, but at least it will inspire you to go outside. But when you get outside - the reality of your garden is so far different from anything in this book, it is hard to make the leap. ....
Lacking in inspiration January 18, 2002 6 out of 10 found this review helpful
I was disappointed that this book only had photographs from a few of Diarmiud's schemes. I had expected it to contain a wider range of photographs from the TV series, and certainly of some of the more exciting schemes he has put together, in order to give me greater inspiration for my own garden. I didn't get as far as reading the text since other books had more inspirational pictures I felt it more worthwhile looking at and reading them.
A excellent book that lives up to the series January 11, 2002 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you enjoyed the series, whether or not you could live with all the designs in your own garden, this book gives an excellent insight into Diarmuid's thought processes behind the overall schemes. There are interesting suggestions on how to create suitable designs including good ideas for types and uses of plants you may not have previously considered. There is a good balance between the description of the briefs, the thinking behind the designs, and the excellent photographs that do the gardens more justice than even the series managed. If you want to incorporate some unusual elements into your garden (even if not to Dairmuid's scale) this book certainly gives you much to think about.
This book is simply stunning April 30, 2001 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Whether you want an all out architectural garden or something simpler, Diarmuid provides the inspiration and practical planting knowledge to help your imagination. Since owning this book I have been inspired to get out an dget digging, a must have for anyone who apreciates design.
Definitely not for the traditionalist! February 8, 2001 4 out of 11 found this review helpful
Well call me old Mrs. Unadventurous but I'm afraid I found most of the garden designs completely over the top. I am sure they appeal to trendies who want to make a statement with something very different but I felt they were both impractical and unaffordable for most people who just want a pleasant and restful garden on a family budget. Of its type it is pleasant enough and attractive book but (dare I say it?) more of a coffee table book than a practical working manual.
