THE book of knots September 2, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Anyone serious about knots, as well as their historical origins, cannot really do without this book. As well as providing the comprehensive guide to (almost) all possible knots, there are also a lot of descriptive asides, for example: what kind of Knot was used for a R.N. Sailor's queue? a 4-ply sinnet?
THE book of knots! October 23, 2003 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Anyone with a serious knot interest needs a copy of "Ashley" sooner or later. The numbers the knots you have in the Ashley (ususally written e g "A#123") serves knotters all over the world as a mututal reference, like species names in Latin serves biologists! The older issues lacks knots for moderns synthetics and webbing, but this is still THE book of knots!
Almost comprehensive July 17, 2002 12 out of 14 found this review helpful
Of course this is the classic book of knots and was in its time probably as comprehensive as any book could be, it still is the most comprehensive and in fact it contains more knots than any sane person would ever want to know. However it is now in need of updating and there are some important omissions especially modern climbing knots such as the munter mule and the slip hitch to a karabiner.
The definitive 'bible' of the knotting world June 13, 1999 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
This two inch thick hard backed book contains (almost) every knot you could ever imagine or want to tie.It covers knots, bends, hitches, splices, whippings, decorative knots, sinnets, tackle and more. Background information and many usage hints are given throughout. Ashley's knowledge of his subject and obvious enthusiasm for all things connected with knots and their usage is clear from the detail incorporated in this book. It is an expert's reference guide, not a 'how to' manual for novices. The small, hand drawn sketchs and sometimes scant instructions are not suitable for the beginner, but the shear quantity of information (in words and pictures) make this the definitive reference guide even though more than 50 years have passed since its inital publication. Having been published in 1944 it does not cover knots suitable for synthetic ropes such as used by the moderen rock climber. You can not claim to have a serious interest in knots and ropework if you do not have a copy of 'Ashley' on your book shelf.
brillant this is the book for experts the altermate June 7, 1999 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
If you want to know any thing about when why and what a knot is used for then this is the book for you. I have used this work to teach advise and for my own pleasure for a conciderable time.
