4 out of 5 stars Fine, but not great   June 12, 2008

This is a fine, basic recipe book, but not particularly inspirational or exciting. The recipes I have tried have worked out well, though!

2 out of 5 stars If you're vegetarian, this really isn't the book for you...   March 14, 2008

This review is for any vegetarian readers.

The good stuff:
This is a great recipe book. Annette Yates has created some lovely (and no doubt delicious) slow cooker recipes, which she presents in an easy-to-follow format. The introductory section on slow cooker "theory" teaches you how to adapt "standard" recipes for your slow cooker, which is great.

I enjoyed her friendly style and believe that meat and fish eating families would find this book an invaluable guide to start them on their slow cooker journey.

The "but"...
However, as a vegetarian, I was disappointed to see how few recipes were vegetable based. There is a chapter called "vegetarian and vegetables", but many of the recipes include ingredients such as bacon, chicken soup and meat stocks. Whilst seasoned vegetarians will be used to adapting recipes, I was really disappointed at the lack of inspiration for meat-free dishes. Including meat-based ingredients in the vegetarian section of any recipe book just misses the point.

So if you're looking for a good book to teach you the basics of slow cooking and plan to cook meat and fish dishes, go for this recipe book, it's great.

If you're vegetarian, it's really a waste of your pennies - I suggest you try 125 Best Vegetarian Slow Cooker Recipes by Judith Finlayson instead - it'll provide you with all the inspiration you need!

Happy slow cooking!
Clare

3 out of 5 stars Handy little book   March 14, 2008

1 out of 5 stars Not impressed   January 10, 2008

I've tried quite a few of the recipe's from this book and found them all lacking in flavour and very bland. If you are a good cook (unlike me) then you'll probably know what to add to make the dishes more flavoursome but then again, if you are a good cook you probably wouldn't even need a recipe book!

5 out of 5 stars Delicious and Practical Recipes   December 25, 2007

Having purchased a slow cooker, I was looking for recipes that I could get on with. My cooking skills are pretty non-existent, but using this book I decided to try the Lamb Navarin.
Well, let me tell you that it turned out absolutely delicious and I can't wait to make some more.
I found loads of recipes on the internet, but most are in American measurements. This book gives ingredients in metric, imperial, and American.
I like the way the authors bring everything to the boil prior to putting the ingredients into the slow cooker. It just seems to me a very practical book that makes things straightforward to a beginner like myself. I intend to buy their 2nd book, too.
