5 out of 5 stars Brilliant book - buy it!   October 19, 2008
I recently went to New York for the first time and this book went everywhere with me. I first opened it on the flight over and couldn't put it down. The street maps in the back and the subway map in the front were invaluable. The Brit Tips were especially useful and the section on 'what to see and do' prompted me to take the Gray Line Tours which were fantastic value and showed me so much more than I could have seen by myself. (Take the 'Night Loop' tour over to Brooklyn to view the Manhattan skyline at night - spectacular!) Even my British friend that I stayed with kept borrowing it from me, so it's now looking a bit worn. The street maps are clearly marked with all the attractions, buildings and places to see which really helped me to 'map out' an itinerary each day. If you're planning to visit New York for the first time, I'd highly recommend this guide - it's invaluable and worth every penny!

1 out of 5 stars it was all going so well.   July 4, 2008

I thought this book was great. Easy to read, very helpful and full of loads information that was really interesting. I really liked how much history the book covers, all about the makings off new york which alot of guide books dont go into. It wasnt untill i was on my trip to new york that i realised that the book has incorrect addresses in it!!! I was walking around trying to find the patricia field store (costume designer for sex and the city) the guide book claimed that the store was on 8th street between 5th ave and University place. Its actually 302 Bowery street. Unfortunatly because of this error I diddnt get chance to go to the store and was left thinking, what else in it was incorrect!

2 out of 5 stars Disapointed   October 12, 2007

I bought the latest edition of this book because it said it was rewritten every year, therefore I expected it to be accurate for my trip a couple of months later. I was disapointed.

Too much information within the book was inaccurate. Prices were wrong, opening times incorrect, tour information just plain wrong. For example it said that if you take the Rockafeller centre tour that you get to see Music City Hall, this was totally wrong (as well as the opening times!). Even some of the "tips" were inacurate.

I also found that the structure of the book was not so well organised, and playing the maps in the centre was a bad idea as it is the most frequently used part of the book and now after just 1 weeks use it is nearly falling apart (at the front or back would be much better).

Also, the maps did not show where most things are, even those mentioned in the book where not marked!

I also felt the "brits view" was a none event. All I noticed was that it translated some British to American words, but lets face it, it's not that difficult to understand!

On the plus side it did have plenty of information of things to do and see.

But overall I am left disapointed with this book and would not buy another similar guide book from them.

2 out of 5 stars Not that great...   August 12, 2007

I bought this book hoping for an interesting 'British' perspective on this all American city. What I got was a standard guide book giving reasonable coverage of the really obvious tourist hot spots, but very limited information about anything off the beaten track.
The central map section is confusing because adjacent pages cover overlapping areas. Many roads therfore appear twice on a single spread, making distances hard to judge. There were also several inaccuracies about opening hours, prices and even museum locations, which for a guide that boasts about being 're-written every year' was very disappointing.

3 out of 5 stars Good "basic" book for first time city breakers!   July 30, 2007

This book covers all the basic tips for getting around New York. It's format is similar to all other travel guides, in that, it is broken into clear sections such as introduction to the city, restuarants, shopping, where to stay, etc. It's downfall is that there is so much to do and see in New York that it only covers the basic information, and for those who tend to visit the States on a regular basis or prefer city break holidays, it is not as comprehensive in it's suggestions and tips as hoped from a guide book.

On a positive note, it is very clear and easy to read. It does contain a good range of maps with a great street index (very helpful considering there are so many of them!) A good "basic" book for first time city breakers!
