5 out of 5 stars A rare insight into a father's mind!   February 16, 2001

I really enjoyed this anthology. It had a well balanced mix of funny and touching stories. Some of them even made me cry. It was excellent to see things from a man's perspective as usually there are endless seas of mother and baby books and nothing which addresses the way men feel. It was nice to be vicariously in touch with some articulate, occasionally sensitive men!

5 out of 5 stars A cracking set of new writings on being a dad   February 4, 2000

Peter Howarth, editor of Esquire, has pulled together a number of great feature writers (the man obviously has serious contacts in the world of feature writers) to compile a great book on the ups and downs of being a dad. From the struggle of not being involved in the whole "woman and kids" scene to the various experiences of pregnancy, labour, trying to come up with a name that the kid won't curse you for, being a dad with young kids and the impossibility of any dad being cool to their children, the essays cover a huge range of contemporary dad-hood experiences, and they are all very well written. I particularly liked Tony Parsons talking about how his own dad influenced the ways in which he has brought up his son, and Neil Spencer on the incompatability of dad-dom and cool. Seeing as I'm about to become a father for the first time, this was a great book to read - funny, well written, well compiled and one of only a few decent books on fatherhood on the market. Buy it.
