4 out of 5 stars short, sharp & funny tales   April 6, 2002

Reading this book was great fun - I read it in a single afternoon! The chapters are really short and they're all different. It's more of a children's book, as the style is simple and direct, with some pictures, but there is sufficient detail and medical explanations to hold an adult's interest as well. There was a superb balance struck between treating the animals with the necessary emotional detatchment, and humanising them - often to great comic effect.

The author is very skillful at keeping his readers involved by showing how commonsense can overcome many different problems in zoo life. I'm not a vet, but while reading the book I kept thinking, "I would be really good at that job!"

My one complaint is that I found the little postscripts at the end of each chapter quite annoying.

Because the chapters are all very short, self-contained stories, they might be suitable as bedtime stories for children. Watch out though - this is a very jolly book, but not all the stories have happy endings!
