Someone ran out of time... August 14, 2008 Disappointing. I really enjoyed the first part of this book although it took me a few chapters to get over the writing style - it felt like an American woman writing in the style of an English man and I couldn't relate to it. For example, The male narrator focused too much on intricate details of items of clothing worn by other characters when "she was wearing a nice top" would have done. And when 'Oaksey' talked about his mobey, I just felt as if she didn't know what we Brits called a cellphone. Mo Hayder is from Essex, which surprised me.
The subject matter intrigued me at first but as it dragged on I found it very putdownable. I only finished it out of courtesy because my housemate lent me it. Some parts were tense and i found myself reading a little bit quicker, other parts were uneccessary which made me read even faster just to get through it.
This could have been a good book, but the author seemed to get bored of it about halfway through (like me). Maybe she put off finishing it until a week before the publishers deadline, then rattled it off without thinking. If only Oaksey had woken up and it had all been a dream!
Where is part two?! July 13, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought Pig Island as I had read Mo Hayder's other books. For me the story started well with allegations of satanism on the island and Oakesy the reporter going to investigate. After that it seemed to stagnate and then tail away(pun intended)so much that by the end I was looking for the next 100 pages. All in all, very disappointing.
Disappointing July 2, 2007 Almost impossible to believe this is the same author who penned the excellent books The Treatment and Tokyo.
captivating May 14, 2007 I started this book whilst on a coach to wembley this weekend. I literally just grabbed it from the shelf. Although I thought the story between arriving on the island and the action happening was a bit rushed the story is interesting and well thought out. I think if she had one through the whole plot thoroughly it could have ended as a lord of the rings type epic. I personally like a book to leave me thinking and asking questions...keep me guessing after Ive finished the last page.
If you want a simple all explained plot dont necessarily read this book as it will leave questions to be answered...
Pig Island April 26, 2007 I actually liked this book. Its the first book from this author I have read so will try the others too! I did lose interest maybe two thirds of the way through I have to say, but I persevered. I kind of agree with a previous comment- it did seem like the ending was rushed or ideas maybe ran out. If the Author is reading these reviews....maybe you could explain the ending to me-I wasnt impressed with it at all, I like HAPPY ENDINGS!! Im going to reread it this evening as it did leave me a little confused. All in all its a good book, and I am reccomending it.
