5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Handbook for the General Reader   August 25, 2007

An excellent handbook for the general reader from the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the United Kingdom. It discusses all of the more common disorders of the mind and many of those less common. Each chapter is contributed by an expert on the illness discussed and begins with a brief story of a typical case. Most chapters share a common format including "What is it?" What does it feel like?" "What can be done to help?" "Self-help" and "Tips for families and friends." Each chapter concludes with a list of support organizations, websites and further reading. Later chapters discuss more general problems such as: alcohol, domestic violence, caring, therapies and medication. The writing is lucid and accessible, unnecessary technical terms are avoided and the focus is on practical assistance. I highly recommend this book for libraries, support organizations and anyone that needs a broad view of current mental health diagnoses and issues.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading   July 19, 2007

As a user of the health services I found it an essential read.
Had I known of the existence of such an easy to understand book which provides succinct explanations of the symptoms of mental disorders I probably would have sought help earlier preventing much confusion and unnecessary pain.
It is also a reassurance as well as an eye opener to the help that is out there with much needed contact information to point you in the right direction for further research on any topic should you choose to use the internet, telephone numbers, organisations etc, it's available.

Further to this the stigma of mental disorder and the implications of reaching for help can perhaps lead to unecessary torment and "The Mind" provides case studies to illustrate how people experience mental disorders and the good news is that *there is now more awareness of it *there is help *and most important of all - you can overcome it with the right treatment.
Much needed book - excellent.
