5 out of 5 stars Narrow Dog to Indian River   May 13, 2008
If you didn't follow the Phyllis May on her trip to Carcassone then you may need a couple of pages to adapt to Terry Darlington's singular prose. After that, it's a brilliant ride down the East Coast of America sharing the joy and, occasionally, the more serious parts of the journey. It's easy to feel like a part of the family but almost impossible to put down the book until you're sure of the outcome.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!   May 5, 2008
Having heard Terry and Monica on Radio 4 recently I bought a copy of Narrow Dog to Indian River to pass the time recovering after a rather unpleasant operation in hospital - and the time (and the book) flew by. I thought my stitches would come out with laughter at several moments (particularly the cat/handbag incident and the "your rat" phenomenon) but more than that it was thoughtful, provoking, honest, inspiring and very, very touching. It is wonderful to know that there are still people such as them who are crazy/brave enough to go out and do crazy/brave things just because (they hope) they can. Thank you Terry, Monica and of course Jim for sharing your experiences - can't wait to read the first book now!

5 out of 5 stars Moon River please   April 30, 2008

Having read Narrow Dog to Carcassone with absolute joy I was delighted to know I didn't have long to wait for the next adventure. Further more I had the great pleasure of meeting Terry, Monica Jim & Jess who were as wonderful and humorous as they are in the book - of course we met in the pub!!
Jim promised me his best rendition of Moon River for posting a review so here it is. A wonderful book to sail away with, full of love, poetry, humour and fear. Terry is a true gentleman, Monica long suffering and Jim the true star of the story. In a world of war and mayhem, do yourself a favour. Travel with the Darlingtons and find a world of literary joy.Terry's style of writing may not appeal to all, but bear with him he has much to tell.
It is important though to read their journey to Carcassone first - it all makes sense - eventually.

5 out of 5 stars If you buy just 1 book this year, buy this one!   April 28, 2008

Well, Terry, Monica and Jim made it safely across America and had me hooked all the way! This book is such good reading I cant wait to finish it so I can read it all over again! It's funny, it's highly descriptive and it's compelling reading. Carcassone was good but Indian River is amazing. Seems to me it was one big scarey adventure from start to finish that left me holding my breath in anticipation as I progressed from page to page and chapter to chapter. How they did it I will never know but they did. What an achievement but most of all, what a couple! And what a book. Now go buy your own copy and settle down with a cup of coffee, a big bar of choccy and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Terry Darlington - mad bad and very dangerous to know!   April 27, 2008
If you like the type of travel book that tells you how to pack your suit case and deal with the difficulties of transporting large cases then this is not for you. Terry Darlington has a unique style of writing that lets you share the experience with him, Mon and Jim without boring you with the nuts and bolts of detail. From time to time his stream of consciousness needs to be reread - but this is not a criticism, it simply adds to the enjoyment.
None of the mundane detail is included, in its place the reader is treated to the high points, the low points and the downright scarey points. And it's not all rose tinted glasses either, I veered from wanting to fly out to join them on their canal boat to willing Mon to put an axe through Terry's skull to stop him risking their lives. A great read.
