exactly how I see the NHS September 16, 2008 spot on . poignant story and so funny. Oh boy - this guy can write. Long Life to Nigel
What happens when the unthinkable happens September 16, 2008 This book will make you laugh and cry. Nigel Smith was taken ill in late 2001 with a brain lesion which affected every part of his body but most particularly his left side. His wife is pregnant with their first child and his mother moves in to keep the household going. The book follows what happens to him from a medical point of view and how he deals with the whole situation from the mental angle. It is harrowing and hopeful and gives an insider's view of intensive care and an ordinary ward as well as a rehabilitation unit. It does contain plenty of four letter words but they are necessary in my opinion to convey the anger and frustration he feels at going from a normal active man to having absolutely everything done for him. Once he is able to think straight his aim in life is to see his child born and this is the goal he works towards throughout the book. I found it uplifting and it gave me a sense of the sheer determination of the human spirit in adversity.
Outstanding - funny, irreverent and moving April 26, 2008 I bought this book after laughing out loud at the quotes on the back of it in the booshop. The inside of it didn't disappoint. My father in law went through a similar journey after a brain aneurysm nearly killed him in his 50s, and I was there every step of the way. The characterisation of the NHS staff, the good, the bad and the downright mad are all familiar and oh so real.
Though this book is a tale of truimph over tragedy it's also very, very funny - I've lent it to everybody I know and the verdict came back the same.
Well done, Nigel, on battling through, and well done Michele on kicking arse when needed (and God knows, it our healthcare system it's sometimes bloody needed!). I wish you continued recovery and your family much happiness for the future.
Horrifically Entertaining November 14, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I don't really know what made me pick up this book. It's not my usual thing at all. I'm glad I did though. This is the true story of Nigel Smith, a funny bloke from the t.v. who had quite a lot going for him until the day he woke up feeling a bit odd and ended up several hours later, in hospital, dying rather rapidly. The fact that it is his voice telling the story spoils the ending a bit, albeit in a good way. Nevertheless it is still a compelling, roller coaster of a book. It is a true page turner. I finished it in a matter of hours. It's also very emotional. I cried; I got furious; I cried some more etc. It also made me laugh, although sometimes in a guilty way! It's fantastic because it is so real and unflinching. It isn't twee or overtly sentimental and I think much kudos should be given to this man's wife, because if I was in hospital nearly dying I'd want someone as resilient as her fighting my corner.
Unputdownable - both of them! October 23, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
A few years ago, pre-disaster, I had the wonderful fortune to be Svengali-ed by Nigel Smith in manner of he told me how crap my book manuscript was and that I should put it together properly and then I might be in business. Hard-line inspirational as he was, I did what he said and I got a book deal. I am totally delighted to see that Nigel has come out the other side as wickedly irreverent, funny and scary as ever. The book is sassy, warm and brilliant. It made me laugh out loud A LOT, it made my eyes fill up and it made me incredibly angry about the state of our hospitals! Good luck to you - I'm so glad you're still around being formidable. Oh and Nigel - you still owe me a pizza!
