4 out of 5 stars Advance your knowledge one small step at a time   July 19, 2007

Many of the customer reviews have some fairly unkind things to say about this book and I would not actually disagree with their opinions. I would even add the criticism that the first two chapters are megaboring. Despite all the faults of this book it does have some good features. The range and choice of computer projects are actually quite interesting even if you had no intention of building them. I would class myself as intermediate knowledge of computers with some basic repair knowledge. Before reading this book I would not have considered attempting to build a computer from scratch; now, I am thinking about it: that's progress.

Very poor book in my opinion, sure there's plenty of pictures but the authors are only interested in Intel machines (although they do have a small chapter on AMD PCs).Another thing is there is very little information on Bios or software installations, they hate Windows and go on about Linux! Most people can build a Pc following their instructions but what if there's a Bios problem, this is what scares us most and this part of the installation wasn't hardly covered at all, don't buy this book go for the Haynes one instead it is much much better.

3 out of 5 stars This one is going back to Amazon!   December 24, 2004

O'Reilly, the publishers, are well known for their informative and readable books on heavyweight technical subjects. I bought this book assuming that it would offer more detail than some of the lightweight books that abound in this area. I was sadly disappointed. The book is padded out with 'how to do it' pictures that verge on being an insult to the would-be PC builder. If this book was sold under the 'Building the Perfect PC for Dummies' title then it would have been fine.

The most annoying thing about the book is the authors' dedication to all things Intel. AMD is dismissed as unreliable and one wonders how this huge company has survived. Oh and of course you must use an Intel motherboard as all those others are - yes, unreliable.

Yup it's going back.!

5 out of 5 stars Cutting to the heart   October 15, 2004

The authors use their years of practical experience to cut through the "Tecbno-Glitz" to allow you to make rational, sensible decisions about equipment to match your needs. That alone would be worth the price of the book. That is followed by a very well illustrated step by step guide to assmbling that computer. Everything is imbued with confidence -building competence from the authors, leaving you with a clear feeling that this is how it is in the "Real World" the reader inhabits. I cant praise this book too highly.
