Amazon.co.uk Review A stuffed toy rabbit (with real thread whiskers) comes to life in Margery Williams' timeless tale of the transformational power of love. Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the day when the Boy (as he is called) will choose him as a playmate. In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human. "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'" This sentimental classic--perfect for any child who's ever thought that maybe, just maybe, his or her toys have feelings--has been charming children since its first publication in 1922.

First class illustrations October 29, 2007 I had this on a gramophone record for my eldest son when he was a child and he could never listen to it without crying although he loved the story! When I saw this on Amazon I couldn't resist the buy for `old times sake'. It is well worth picking up this particular copy because I think the illustrations are out of this world! A real treasure of a book.
The Velveteen Rabbit February 8, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I give this book two stars for its excellent diction and a few amusing bits of description. It seems that some children's books become classics less on merit than because they are the right length for publishers to promote and buyers to afford. I suspect that that is why this painfully sentimental story* with its abstract "The Boy" protagonist stays in print while the same author's delightful masterpiece, "Poor Cecco" is long out of print and valued by book dealers mainly for its (unusually witty) Arthur Rackham illustrations. But this tale of Poor Cecco the wooden dog, his fellow residents of the nursery toy cupboard, and an amusing cast of human and animal supporting characters - all with distinctive personalities - and their droll adventures at home and on the road, is a treasure replete with mystery, surprises, and an elegantly natural style. I was lucky to be given it as a child and wish others could be so fortunate.
*Shel Silverstein must have used The Velveteen Rabbit as a model for his creepy best seller, "The Giving Tree."
It was really sad January 18, 2006 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I found this book really sad. I won't spoil the story and yes, it does have a happy ending, of a sorts, I cried buckets. I couldn't read this book to a child.
A book to hand down January 3, 2005 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
The velveteen rabbit is a book my daughter aged 5 and myself love equally; the story of a toy rabbit becoming real through the love of a little boy, transcending his tatty fur and worn out appearance to become a 'real' rabbit; it appeals to children who may imagine this scenario with their own beloved toys and it is a favourite for me because of its well written classic style, shameless use of good english and 'grown up' language and the corresponding illustrations. Buy this, inscribe the front inside cover and watch it become a family treasure.
A wonderful classic story June 17, 2001 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
A story which I used to read to my daughter at bedtime when she was young and which I know she will read to her children in the years to come. A wonderful story which passes the test of time!
