An the Journey Continues January 4, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
There are two separate storylines running in this book. Travis and three of his friends are stuck on earth, back in the 1800's. They must try and find Jack, the rune lord who will in the future give Travis his powers. Unfortunately the Pale King is trying to break free, and his socerer as followed Travis back to earth. On Eldh Grace and the rest of the group are searching for their lost companions, unaware they are back on earth, in the past. And Grace discovers her heritage and becomes a target for the Pale King. This was a brilliant fast moving plot, with plenty of tense moments. The ending however was disappointingly rushed.
The Final Part of The Last Rune? November 30, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book does not conclude the story of the Last Rune, as stated in the synopsis which accompanies the entry on Amazon. However, it was both enjoyable and complex (as most of the best tales are). The author is skilled in presenting a real sense of menace in describing the various trials undergone by the characters on Earth and Eldh, and he sets the scene well for the forthcoming final conflict. I look forward to getting the real last book of the Last Rune.
Beyond the Pale August 24, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Mark Anthony's books of 'The Last Rune' are all well written and cover angles of SF Fantasy that I've never read before. In addition to the strong story line, the Author's handling of the relationships and sexual dynamics of the main Characters (Greek historic references aside) is something that I've never come across before and adds a real depth to the characters that I hadn't even realised was missing from other books I've read. After reading Beyond the Pale, I imagined that i 'knew what was coming' but each subsequent book takes you somewhere completely unexpected and new. Put your preconceptions of SF and Fantasy characters aside when you read these books because Mark Anthony is re-writing the rules as he goes and he's doing it well. The first book in this series, Beyond the Pale was released in 1998 and it's been about one book a year since then. As a heavy reader this means that, no matter how good a book is, I've often forgotten half the plot by the time the next book is published. Unless you don't read a great deal or you're willing to go thought the previous books each time a new one is released, you may want to wait until the series is finished before you start on these as they rely pretty heavily upon your familiarity with the rest of the series.
