5 out of 5 stars An Good Starting Source   August 14, 2003

Domino & Notes is a very "rich programming" environment and although I work with many other technologies from Microsoft etc, I must admit, it is the one I am very fond of if only, because it is very difficult to explain to people. "It is a mail system", well yes it is but, it is a lot more than that however, understanding it as a mail system and the administration, might be a good starting point.

The main difficulty with Domino (the Server), and Notes (the client), is that it has the capacity to do so many things from just mail to complete business systems using workflows, knowledge management, Intranets, web serving and so on. It's main problem lies in the fact that it is a "unique" environment where more things are possible than can be easily imagined at outset. In fact, I personally as an "IT Contractor" (IT tart for hire),wonder whether even IBM who owns it, understands the full scope of what it does.

So in reviewing this book, what can I say except, that if you want to buy just one book on development, it's a very good place to start from. However, get some practical experience and exposure to deployed Notes solutions and, do not be surprised if you end up, like me, with over 20 other books on different aspects of the same system including, the dreaded "Administration", it's just like that.

If I take myself back to where I started originally and ask the question, "Would this book be a good place to start from in development ?" The answer would be yes, it is a good place to start from. "Is it the only book I will ever need ?" Hmm... No, but it is a very good place to start from if you are interested in developing applications.

This must be a good book - it was originally published by Sams but has since been rebranded and now appears to be an IBM publication. Inside you'll find good coverage on what's new in Domino 6 development, but its focus is primarily towards LotusScript, JavaScript, Java and XML. Personally I'd have liked to have seen more information on the new formula language functions but you can't have it all I suppose. What's here is good, and this is definitely a worthwhile purchase.
