An Absolute Treasure. January 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Note - it's nearly a year since I posted the following review, but I've come back to say that I wish I could give this little book *another* 5 stars. I still use it regularly, and turn to it more often than any other Linux book in my collection. =================================================================
I made the switch to Linux about a year ago. I'd tried (many times) in the past, but Linux on a desktop just wasn't ready for a non-techie user like me. Then Ubuntu Linux came along and changed all that.
While you can use Linux just as a straight Windows replacement and just 'do stuff', there's something about it that draws you in, and makes you want to know more about your computer... So I quickly found that I'd acquired a growing library of Linux books. For example, on the shelf beside this computer, I have 'The Ubuntu Linux Bible', 'Hacking Ubuntu', 'Running Linux', 'Ubuntu Hacks', and The Linux Phrasebook.
They all have their uses, but for anyone who wants to start exploring the Linux command line, none of them can touch this little gem. I still use it all the time, both as a reference to look stuff up, and occasionally just to work through a chapter and remind myself of some useful commands.
Many of my other Linux books were expensive - this one wasn't. If you just want to scratch the surface of what the command line can do and learn a few vital commands, this book is for you.
If you want to become a Linux guru and power user, doing all sorts of geeky hacker-looking stuff, then this book is for you too.
I really can't recommend it highly enough. Just buy it now! Click that button! You know you want to!!
An excellent resource for users learning the Linux command line January 13, 2008 This is the reference book Linux users have been waiting for. If you have ever struggled with MAN pages then this is for you. Crammed full of examples of commands and how to use them. This book is an absolute bargin for the price and small enough to put in your pocket. One of the few Linux books I use every day, and its well written too. Well worth 5 stars.
Extremely Handy Title May 18, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am a relative newcomer to the unix command line and found this book to contain loads of useful examples for everyday tasks. Withing minutes of reading this I had found a command I was unaware of but have had a use for on many occasions (tail -f filename).
Would highly recommend this to other newcomers as a comprehensive reference to many unix commands.
Great help! February 12, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have a small library of linux-related books I've acquired since going over to FLOSS on my home machine but this is the one I've referred to more than any other. It's very readable - even for a newbie - well laid out and goes over the basic stuff you need to know to work from the shell rather than the GUI. My copy is getting very battered from constant-ish reference - as an example, last night I used it to sort out some problems I was having with permissions, and this book's guide to chmodding using octal numerical notation was clearer than anything else I could find. I would definitely recommend it!
