Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Shocking revelations   October 18, 2008
Bette Davis' daughter has written a scathing memoir of their tortured relationship. Not only did Bette allow her to be beaten by husband number four, Gary Merrill, but every word out of Bette's mouth was a curse or epithet designed to humiliate, degrade, and destroy her daughter. This abuse continued until the publication of this book when Bette was 77 and B.D. was 38. The epilogue is an open letter to Bette begging her to change her ways or never see her daughter again.

The book is very convincing; Bette Davis was a heartless, manic fiend whose every sentence reads like an hysterical speech from a movie script. Bette never once appears rational or kind, let alone maternal or loving. Since B.D. turned out to be a happy and happily married (for 40 years) woman and not only hate-free but also pretty much perfect, one wonders how this could be possible growing up in such a damaging home.

How much of the book is real and how much is fabricated? At least half of it is dialogue, dating as far back as when the author was a toddler. How could she remember who said what so perfectly? There are no witnesses to back-up B.D.'s accusations, so I can only wonder. If it isn't true, the author comes off as the biggest brat in history; if it is true, my heart breaks for her. Three stars for being a dramatic page-turner.
