Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A hilarious, warm-hearted odyssey.   July 18, 2001

This really splendid book holds appeal for anyone between the ages of three and one hundred. The story follows an epic, but probably not unusual, day in the life of the world's most inspiringly good-natured, dynamic grandmother. Having received a cry for help from her engaging, but completely useless son, Scrimshaw, our granny undertakes a long and complicated journey to come to his aid. Her amazing foresight equips her perfectly for the many obstacles she meets along the way, and her modes of transport get wilder as the story progresses.

Margaret Mahy's use of language is inspirational. The character and place names are really evocative, and the delicious sounding "Cockahoop Honey Cake" has been adopted by my family as a far more exciting way to describe a Victoria Sponge!

By the end of this whirlwind of a story, we can understand the relief felt by our heroine as she sinks, exhausted but satisfied, into bed, having done a good job well!
