A 10th grade girl with problems in her family. April 15, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The book, Don't You Dare Read This Mrs. Dunphrey by Margaret Peterson Haddix is a very interesting book to me. It is one of books that once you start to read it you do not want to put it down. This book is about a tenth grader named Tish that has been asked to write a journal for English in school. Tish was told it would be a big percentage of her grade, but Mrs. Dunphrey says, "If you put don't read this at the top of your entry then I won't read it." Tish takes her word for it and trusts her and ends up writing her whole life in this journal. At the end of the year, Tish lets Mrs. Dunphrey read it. After Mrs. Dunphrey reads Tish's entries, she decides to get help for Tish, who has been abandoned by her parents and has been living on her own with her brother. At the beginning of the book it starts out kind of slow and towards the middle of the book it goes faster and gets better. Towards the end of the book it does kind of drag. The end also frustrates me because I want to know how her life is going to end up and if she made it through life okay. Other than that, this a very good book. If you want an interesting book, READ THIS!
YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK! March 25, 1999 Whoa! This book was amazingly delightful. I loved the way that it is a diary. It made me feel as if I was going right along with Tish, sharing her suspense, hardships, disapointments, and delights. It's absolutely wonderful. Read it!
Using "Don't you dare . . ." in the classroom November 7, 1998 After reading this book on tape, I dedicded to use it in my high-school English classroom. I read one chapter every few days to my students. It has really inspired them to write in their own journals.
This is a great book for young adults!! November 7, 1998 What I liked about this book is the way Tish faced her problems. Also that she would always be with her little brother Matt eyerytime their parents left them alone. It involves a lot of suspense page after page.
A touching tale of a courageous teenager. Must read! February 28, 1998 Haddix pulls the reader deeper and deeper into a tangled web of a young girl's life. Each time, Tish Bonner writes "Don't you dare read this,Mrs. Dunphrey," in her journal, we long for Mrs. Dunphrey, Tish's teacher, to read the journal. Will Mrs. Dunphrey keep her promise and obey Tish's strict warning or will she reach out to this troubled teen? That is the question that propels us, page after page.
