A long way from 'chick lit' August 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A lot like the rest of us - 3 flawed but memorable characters digging their way out of various holes with new revelations about each scattered right the way through the book.
The love story is incidental rather than central, but nonetheless enjoyable because of that.
Great texture as she roams through Franck's cooking and Camille's drawings, and her prose is sharp with not a word out of place.
Ignore any bookjacket fluff comparing it to Amelie. This book stands alone.
Absolutely wonderful! June 10, 2008 I read this book once and thoroughly enjoyed it. Though the first couple of chapters are slow it's an absolute cracker after that! It's amazing, inspirational and full of characters you want to take home. I have read it a second time and knowing how it all pans out did not dull the enjoyment for one second. An absolutely fabulous book. Laughter, tears, love, life, death, comedy. A(i hesitate to say it) perfect book. Savour every morcel
Enchanting, engrossing, evocative... May 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Initially I found this novel hard work, the first few chapters were slightly nonsensical and vague and I had to push myself to continue. Luckily for me, I persevered and was introduced to the wonderfully quirky World hidden behind the doors of an imposing Parisian apartment. Philibert - a downtrodden intellectual with a penchant for writing, his fiery flatmate - the talented chef Franck, Franck's ageing, beloved grandmother Paulette and finally Camille - a waif like artist that is rescued from herself...As this enchanting tale unfolds, they all rescue each other and a love story is shaped. Not only was the story seamless and exquisitely written, it's characters were whole and very likable and as you move through the pages, that initial vagueness, the sense of not really understanding what the author was trying to say, becomes crystal clear. I believe this is the quintessential modern day classic and a must for readers of all genre's...
Best book I've read this year April 4, 2008 This book was recommended to me and it didn't appeal. After the fourth recommendation, I read it. Oh my gosh, it's beautiful. She is such an intelligent writer, and in places I was laughing out loud even on the last paragraph. Delicious ending and this writer knows exactly what it is to be a chef, anorexic and a misfit. First book I've read that I wanted to put down because I wanted to savour it. A definite reread.
Beautiful and romantic January 7, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
After the first few chapters, which I felt moved somewhat slowly, this beautiful novel grabbed me and I found myself looking forward to my long commute so that I could become engrossed again in its charming, warm and romantic world.
