4 out of 5 stars Well up to standard   November 6, 2008

I loved the first three in this series and this one, eagerly-anticipated as it was, didn't disappoint. I agree that it's more about Simon than the case, but if the reader has read the first three before this one that shouldn't be too much of a problem, and the case is gripping enough to carry the main story, that of the Serraillier family. Ah yes, the Serrailliers. Well, Simon is as aloof as ever and we hardly know him any better after this book; the story of his father's new relationship makes it clear that the deceased Meriel may not have been quite the saint Simon thinks she was; and although I was shocked at the main family development here, in a nasty sort of way I wasn't sorry to see Cat shaken out of her comfortable rut. One plea to SH - do something about the obnoxious Sam. Like striking him permanently dumb. His 'cute' prattle grates hideously.

3 out of 5 stars Unconvincing on crime procedure   November 2, 2008

'They had climbed for two hours. Then they had come into the low-hanging curtains of cloud'.

The book opens with the reminder that Susan Hill writes beautifully and is great on summoning up the countryside. But in this novel I am less than fully convinced by the Simon Serailler character and frankly fully unconvinced by his love life and the slow burning start to the romance with Jane, the Anglican vicar.

The reason for the 3 stars I give? which I see is out of line with most of the reviews here - the writing is good - the handling of the police investigation just isn't.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the last three...but still excellent!   October 14, 2008

Everyone has been out with a Simon Serailler at some point (beautiful, intelligent, tallented and yet as insecure as they come). I really do hope Susan Hill lets the poor bloke settle down at some point. I was a bit disappointed with this, the fourth in the series, as I guessed whodunnit within the first few chapters. It was blatently obvious. No twist. No turns. Nothing as wonderful as the twists regarding Ed the pedophile in the last few books (and I do LOVE how Hill has never really explained Ed - nothing like leaving the reader to guess). A few of the main characters have now been killed off over the last few books (Martha, Meriel, Chris, Karen...) and I have to wonder what Hill will do next?

This is a novel about a detective rather than about detection. Enjoyable but more crime and plotting next time please.
