3 out of 5 stars Some good stuff but lacking in detail   May 13, 2005

Overpriced, like the exam, people will pay anything when taking the MRCPsych. The ideas and overall content of this book are useful but it is sadly lacking in detail. More PMPs and Long Case examples are needed. Also more advice on exam approach would be helpful, rather than the boring 'turn up on time' & 'wear a tie' stuff.

2 out of 5 stars Diappointing and lacking value-for-money   April 26, 2001

The biggest problem with this book is that it is a skeleton and what I felt it needed, at its price, was a lot more flesh. It certainly contains a lot of useful and sensible information but nothing that most people cannot just as easily pick up in lectures or courses. There is really nothing in here to substantially increase your chances of passing the MRCPsych exams. I bought it for my future Part II attempt. I was really disappointed by the lack of worked examples more than anything else. For example, there are a few essay plans but no example of an actual essay. Maybe, I am asking too much but this would really have helped. They describe some techniques for writing essays but they do not make much sense without more substantial examples. Again, the PMP section has some sensible advice but no sample PMPs. The advise on the clinical is good but they do not explain how much time should be spent on each section of the presentation to the examiner - this is important for the Part I. On the positive side there is an easy-to-understand chapter on statistics which is one of the best I have seen because of its simplicity. There are a useful few pages on a technique for memorisation called "Mindmaps" which they illustrate with just one example; it's not something I plan on using but some people who do not have their own efficient sytem of learning facts may find it helpful. Overall, I think people preparing for the MRCPsych (I and II) would be better off going to one of the well known revision courses and using their tips and handouts. Overall, that would be cheaper too as you can normally get your trust to pay for the course out of your study leave budget!
