5 out of 5 stars Seriously good   September 19, 2007

I agree with the first reviewer having learnt the recorder at a similar time. Other books have fancy graphics and side comments which are essentially distracting as my kids ended up just flicking through the books instead of learning to read and play music. With this book as soon as it came in my daughter (11 yrs) tried it and the next day had finished the book and was able to read and play competently from other music books. Now she has even learnt them off by heart. I'm looking for the other "oldie" books now.

4 out of 5 stars OLDIE BUT GOODIE!   May 7, 2006

I think this book must be as old as I am - I used it as a kid in the 1960s. I have recently started teaching recorder to children and adults, and having looked at alternatives, have come back to this book as my main resource. It explains thoroughly but clearly as much as the student needs to know, without any gimmicks which have to be unlearned later. Once you have worked through this book you have a repertoire of English folk tunes, hymn tunes and light classics, when you thought you were actually just learning an instrument! Perhaps the format looks a bit 1950s, but do persevere with it, it does a thorough job! Book 2 is equally good, but a bit more rare.
