4 out of 5 stars Value for money   January 30, 2008

Maybe this is not for the very serious walker, but for those of us not up to the longer walks, this provides a very good resource in terms of variety and coverage and the fact it caters for shorter walks. It would not be possible to provide the required level of detail for all 1001 walks in one book, so I think a local map would always be advisable. We are pleased with it.

2 out of 5 stars A great idea, let down by poor-quality maps   June 18, 2007

The maps in this book unfortunately leave a lot to be desired. We've managed to get lost several times by trusting too much in the maps from this book- and we're normally very good navigators, honest! The fact that each walk listed has a Suggested Ordnance Survey map suggests that even the authors know that the maps provided are below par.

It's a shame really as in principle this book is a great way to find out about places and walks of interest that you might otherwise not have heard about, not just way across the country but also closer to home.

A good starting point to find out about walks, but once you've picked a walk, a quick look at a map with more detail might save you from adding a few extra unexpected muddy miles to your route...

3 out of 5 stars Useful in parts   June 10, 2007

This is a great resource for planning a day out, locally or if you are in an unfamiliar part of the country. It can direct you to some wonderful parts of the UK and has some hidden gems. The distance and timings seem fairly accurate as is the level of severity. The down side is that the directions and maps are not particularly accurate. You can easily get lost if you do not pre-plan the routes with the help of a good Ordnance Survey Map, and a compass may not be a bad thing too. To be fair they do recommend using another map to supplement the sketches. Obviously, any guide book like this is going to be out of date as soon as it is printed, as many features may no longer exist, as is the case with this book. Overall though, it is well presented, and can give some ideas off the beaten track, just dont rely on accuracy of description.

4 out of 5 stars A Lifetime of Walks   February 14, 2006

My partner and I refer to this magnificent tome as 'the bible' and continuing this theme it is probably both old and new testament rolled into one as it is a huge book! Book isn't necessarily what it is though. It is more of a collection of 8 walks per sheet in a ringbinder that can be folded and placed in the handy waterproof case that comes with the collection. There are walks in every conceivable part of Britain from urban strolls to more strenuous Lake District/North Yorks Moors treks. If you want plenty of choice then this is the book for you. However, because of the sheer volume of walks included the directions that come with each walk are minimal. If you are looking for historical/cultural/geographical etc background to these walks then you will need to buy an accompanying book to the area or swot up on the net before you travel. That and some patchy/out-of-date maps with dodgy directions make this book lose a mark but for well-organised ultra-choice this book is super value and highly recommended.
