Very useful January 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a nicely succinct and well presented guide book. I used it predominantly for travel and choosing places to eat and shop- the 'big' sights are well signposted. I found the ratings given to places very fair and the price guide accurate. The maps were OK, however they were a little small for planning walks with; you can get free maps anyway, when you get there.
AA Essential Guide to Budapest March 31, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For me, this is possibly the most useless guidebook I have ever used. The maps are two small and disjointed. There seemed to be no logic to their order and they fail to pinpoint sites Worse still was the tube/bus map which was so samll as to be unreadable. If the Budapest 3 mtro lines are defined by blue, read and gold. Why does the AA guide cheerfully assign other colours. If that is not confusing, what is. Imagine a London underground map with the district line coloured red? Otherwise it was superficial, and told nothing more than the 100 page freebie that came with the Budapest Card.
Let down by the maps March 29, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book was doing so well until you reach the map section. The individual map pages are very detailed, but there is no page in the book that shows how the map pages link together, which is very frustrating if you're only away for the weekend and need to quickly find where you are. Also, some of the street names for places recommended in the book are not actually in the index for the map, which again is frustrating after being persuaded to go by the reviews in the book. This is a good, small, handy book to take away with you, but the fact I needed to rely on another book for directions kind of defeats all af this.
Excellent, concise and pocket sized guide August 30, 2005 32 out of 33 found this review helpful
I used this for a one day quick stop tour of Budapest. I have relatives in Hungary and wanted to travel into Budapest alone whilst I was staying over to see what there was to see.I bought this guide before I left as it looked extraordinarily feature packed and very functional for the type of trip I planned. The AA guide has an excellent top 10 places to see and whilst you can't do all of them in a day (unless you race around which is no fun) the recommendations are spot on. I managed to do six of the ten and I intend to see the rest the next time I go. There is also an excellent fold out metro and bus route planner in the rear and detailed maps of the entire city amazingly all squeezed into this massively value for money, and yet still pocket-sized, guide. Needless to say, It was very useful.
