4 out of 5 stars looks great but more information please!   November 1, 2004

Beautiful illustrations and cut-away diagrams are the hallmarks of this excellent series of books; this Guide is no exception and is useful for planning a visit and working out what to see and do in different areas of Rome. It also has an excellent section on the Sistene Chapel ceiling and wall frescoes, very useful when your are craning your neck whilst being jostled by a thousand other sight see-ers. Unfortunately it is rather light on actual historical information and explanation of what you are seeing and overall feels rather superficial; this is a criticism I feel is in common with this series in general- certainly if you know an area well you are often surprised at the omissions in these books, hence I am always suspicious that I may be missing something when I use these guides. For a more in depth explanation of all things Roman I would recommend the Blue Guide to Rome. Use both and you will be very satisfied. Buy this book alone and you may feel rather frustrated, but it's worth the money for the lovely pictures and that excellent section on the Sistene Chapel.

5 out of 5 stars A very good book   October 18, 2004

After a few days on holiday in rome with this DK Eyewitness guide you will be lost without it (I was literally because it had a map in it). Another thing you will notice is that you will start referring to it as "The Book" or "The Bible", it has all the information you would reasonably expect, I found the listings of opening hours of attractions very useful. Weak points are that it is not as exhaustive on food or accomodation as it is more 'guided' towards the attractions.

Buy it you will not be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Worth while and very useful!   December 29, 2003
An excellent guide to the city of Rome, without weighing you down! On the other hand, the same publisher have got a guide on italy, that includes almost the same info on Rome, so if you are travelling to other places in Italy, you may consider buying that edition in stead.

But the guide provides extensive information, and it is especially useful to have the maps on big sights like the Vatican Museum etc where you can easily get lost on your own amongst all the paintings etc.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Companion   March 13, 2002

This is a very typical example of this highly commendable series. An excellent first introduction to this wondrous city and possibly very good for the second short visit too.
However, do not be fooled it is not comprehensive enough for those who want to get to know the city well nor for those who want to seek out it's hidden gems.
Very strong on where to eat, sleep and shop and pictorially excellent, but do read the Rough Guide first and then do some research before you go.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant descriptions, excellent visuals, comprehensive.   March 5, 2002

DK Eyewitness Guide to Rome is a brilliantly complete and well written description of this absorbing city. The cut aways, elevations, maps, and other colorful visuals are so much clearer and more comprehensive than any other guide book I have bought. Without going into one church, Eyewitness Rome led this amateur historian from the famous to the obscure, enchanting all the way.
