Extremely useful and easy to understand October 5, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
An excellent starting point for anyone interested in Foucault's thought. The book includes a accessible glossary of the special terms Foucault uses, which I found very helpful. All of the writings and concepts are covered in chronological order (more or less), and contemporary everyday examples to support Foucault's theory are provided throughout the book. Ideal all-in-one overview for a beginner. However, you'd need to consult the originals if you are looking for more than an easy to follow introduction.
An excellant introduction for the novice May 14, 2002 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
Although this book does not provide comprehensive insight into the profound thought of Foucault, it certainly provides an excellant introduction into the fundamental elements. It is perhaps more useful as a first year university text, for those having difficulty with the primary sources. The explanation's offered for the principal concerns of Foucault - namely history, power, discipline and identity - are powerful, creative and well presented. Of most use, perhaps, is the section that considers 'governmentality and liberlism' which negotiates some of Foucaults more complicated assertions. If you are looking for a book that provides a 'quick fix', then this is the book for you. It has a very useful glossary that lays the foundation of Foucauldean thought, working through his concerns with a clarity and cogency that makes it accessible to all readers. Maybe for those of a 'non-academic' disposition it is of limited use, but nonetheless it is interesting for anyone who is interested in gender, media and ethics. Those studing Neitzche will find it helpful as a tertiary source, but it is perhaps a more useful text for those working against Marxism, Structuralism, and psycholanalysis as it undermines many of these positions. Though not as in-depth as The Focualt Reader (Rainbow), it must be seen - as well as read- as a beautiful INTRODUCTION to this most modern of thinkers.
