Mind Reader August 10, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I read the last essay on the last page, I put the book down and repeated aloud, "fantastic". I too am returning to America after living in England for 12 years. Coming Home and Coming Home Part 2 sum up my feelings so completely perfecty. So many poignant stories including Drowning In Red Tape about the immigration process and Your Tax Form Explained. So hilarious, so true. It's like Bill has read my mind. What an amazing writer he is. I can't get enough.
Confusing title changes November 13, 2002 38 out of 38 found this review helpful
As a Bill Bryson fan, and a regular traveller, it gets really confusing when I find Bryson's books in airports with new titles coupled with a new cover page. Not everyone knows that "Down Under" is called "In a Sunburned Country" in the US as well as in some other countries. And if you ordered "I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away" from your internet bookstore, you'd be surprise to find that you already have this book under the title "Notes from a Big Country". Why not find a title that would work on both sides of the Atlantic...?!!
Absolutely hilarious and entertaining November 22, 1999 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel from coast to coast without seeing anything.- Charles KuraltMr. Bryson would enjoy the above quotation.
This Is My Life.... November 6, 1999 Since I moved to America three years ago from London, where I was born, Bill Bryson has just about kept me going. Through all his other travel books I have said my own farewell to Britian, relived fond memories of the continent, and discovered America. This book manages to bring together all my feeling on America, after three years of trying to learn the American words for everything myself, I can truly say that this book is the diary of my first years in the States that I never bothered to keep. Thank you Bill Bryson, for making me feel like I'm not alone - especially with the INS!
Bill Bryson Bore Alert August 23, 1999 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
To satisfy my curiosity, I had to see why BB tops the UK Best-sellers for what seems like, forever. This was my third attempt at reading BB and I have to say that this book fails again. Having lived and worked in New England for many years, I always enjoyed the cultural differences between the US and UK/Ireland and definitely thought there was a book in the subject and so was really looking forward to humorous accounts of petrol vs gas stories etc. I stopped reading it three quarters way through because like the other BB books, it was very boring.
