5 out of 5 stars the wisdom of donkeys   September 5, 2008

This unassuming and gentle book is the story of one man's journey - to nowhere in particular. He travels with a large chocolate coloured donkey named Gribouille somewhere in the depths of rural France. We hear very little about the countryside - he talks of 'being high in the mountains in the emerald mist', but not much else. Mainly he offers snippets of collected wisdom, poetry and anecdotes dealing with donkeys. Somehow on his meandering walk we come to realise that this is a man who has had a troubled time being himself and has spent many years searching for something...or other. The longing in him seems to have been satisfied by his walk with the donkey..somehow the placid, dignified and stoic nature of the beast transfers to him and he is deeply soothed by it. At the end of the book, when he returns home to his wife, we know that he is not searching any more and his content with his lot transfers to us too, through the pages of his subtle and inspirational writing- and because of his deep affection for the humble donkey.
