4 out of 5 stars Elliott Poetry Selection   June 26, 2008
This volume is expensive & slight, but it is an essential source on the Corn Law Rhymer, since it contains a very wide selection of his work. Some 126 poems (about a third of the works) appear in the book, though Prof Storey does not explain his selection criteria. Nevertheless, all the best poems are covered with ample extracts from the longest poems.

A 20 page intro gives a biographical sketch, plots the poet's position in contemporary literature & makes a positive assessment of Elliott's importance as a poet, but perhaps underestimates the bard's prominence in the Chartist Movement.

A few points need mentioning: Elliott was self-taught & would never have considered himself well educated; he most certainly saw himself as working class; he was never a member of the Anti-Corn Law League, and Noah was his daughter, not a son. Despite a few inaccuracies, it is good to see a scholarly approach to Elliott, and Mark Storey deserves a firm handshake for bringing critical attention to the Poet of the Poor & his work.
