Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars When in Mexico, read another book...   August 29, 2008
I must confess that I am thoroughly disappointed with this book. The list of questions on the blurb and on product review pages suggested the book would be able to offer practical advice on issues and circumstances which a traveller may encounter. Presented alphabetically by theme and subtheme (each receiving a single leaf or rarely more than two), the sections of the book offer little more than the most superficial glance at any given area - and they are cliched to say the least. Superstitions, for instance, is a terrible waste of a page. The only concrete example is that tuesdays are unlucky for weddings; beyond which rural sorts are 'particularly suscpetible to physical/medical scares'. For good measure, the author writes of imported superstitions, to fill the remaining two-thirds of the page! What of the continuation of Aztec rituals while adjusting to christendom, in case christianity 'didn't work'; and the calender-based quirks of Mayan belief?

'Being a woman in Mexico' neglects to mention the hundreds of thousands of women who grace the increasingly cosmopolitan major cities, attending universities in increasing numbers, and progressively gaining wider access to better employment. Instead all Mexican women are lumped together as a social under-class, simultaneously ruling a matriarchal domestic environment; and ALL Mexican men will whistle at ALL women encountered. Apparently.

(very) Rare caviats make the book momentarily enjoyable - such as the pinatas' origin as a religious conversion method by priests. I could see 'When in Mexico, do as the mexicans do' as potentially useful to an eight-year-old's school project, but utterly unsuitable for either the traveller or indeed the inquiring mind.
