2 out of 5 stars You're better off getting some good advice from your GP   October 22, 2002

This book is exactly the same as the many others I've read in the hopes of finding something that will help with Candida. It's very easy to take one persons word for it that various food restrictions and supplements will help, but please see your GP before starting any kind of candida diet. Unfortunately, as with other books all it does is put you on such a restrictive diet that you really don't get all the vitamins and nutrients your body needs. After staying on the recommended diet for a number of weeks my GP was horrified at how much weight I'd lost and how little of the essential nutrients I was getting. I was referred to a dietician who confirmed the GPs concerns and said I was basically starving myself and not necessarily the candida. I was thoroughly shocked and dissapointed that I'd wasted time and money to find this out. After some careful explanations from the dietician I understood what I should eat and what should be avoided and after just a few short weeks my health was so much better. I really advise anyone going on a candida diet to talk thoroughly with their GP first and possibly even with a dietician to make sure you're doing the right thing.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring Basic Guide to Candida   April 4, 2002
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

This is a good basic guide to the problems of Candida and to an anti-Candida diet. There's lots of practical advice about the psychological aspects of the diet (feeling left out when others go out for dinner, how to stay motivated, etc.)as well as tips on planning meals, dealing with dinner parties and eating out.
There is also quite a comprehensive recipe selection, which you could use as the base for many Candida diet meals.
This book made me more determined to follow the diet and helped me feel more positive about it- the testimonials from others who have had success with it are very inspiring, and would be particularly helpful to look at should enthusiasm wane during the diet!
My only criticism would be that advice on certain relevant subjects (food combining, intolerances, high-glygemic foods and the right probiotics to take) is scant, but a book this size can not be expected to cover everything.
It is not the only book you'll need to help you win the fight against Candida...but it is an excellent starting point, and I'd highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Easy going introduction, short on detail   May 31, 2001

This is an introduction to the problems that might be caused by candida infection. Candida is a yeast that lives within us all, usually without symptoms, but occasionally, when our immune systems are depressed, goes haywire. Many people think that when this happens, a wide range of debilitating symptoms emerge. This book is a good, cheap introduction to the nature of the problem, the possible symptoms, and methods of self-treatment. It does however lack the detail of some other books, most notably Chaitow's "Could yeast be your problem?"
