Easy-to-follow but a bit brief November 1, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having been sold on the way Lonely Planet guides are written, I was a little disappointed by this book as it gave me the impression there wasn't too much to see in Florida. The reality is a long way away from that and I frequently found myself referring to other guides to get the necessary information. I didn't use the hotel guides so cannot comment on them, but I found the restaurant guides a little out-of-date as many of the places described (in Miami) didn't seem to exist any more.On a positive note, the maps are as usual for Lonely Planet very good, and I found the facts, reference and useful information very good. I guess the answer is really to get the more localised Lonely Planet guides, rather than the one for whole of Florida which is after all a pretty big place.
Too brief, lacking essential detail. November 27, 2000 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
The details given, merely scratch the surface of what Florida has to offer. Lacking in information, for example the orlando section, important details such as park opening times are a bit hit and miss, with some sections not even showing the times. Planning your holiday to Florida is crucial, however this book does not assist you in any way. This book does not live up to the Lonely Planet reputation.
Initially promising guide spoilt by patronising tone. September 5, 2000 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
The content of this guide seems to be very comprehensive with excellent maps, thorough listings etc. (although I haven't used it in anger yet) but the patronising tone and juvenile language of the authors is extremely irritating. Unless your idea of travel is to see how much money you can save and to have fun sneering and lecturing at the dumb tourists (as opposed to the 'travellers' seeing the 'real Florida'), I'd look for an alternative guide book. I would have thought that Lonely Planet would be anxious to distance themselves from this sort of writing.
