A Great Batman Adventure September 14, 2008 Legacy although not as good as Contagion (the previous virus graphic novel in the series) is a great read. It's a rollicking adventure across the world and includes Ras al Ghul, Talia and Catwoman amongst the characters. It's old school Batman at it's best. Don't miss out if you'd read Contagion and want to read the finale to the virus saga.
The Sequel to Contagion - A rare Graphic Novel October 15, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the follow up to the Batman graphic novel called Contagion. At the end of that particular graphic novel, Gotham had recovered from a virulent virus that threatened to kill most of it's population, and then infect the rest of the world. Robin had survived this infection, known as 'The Clench' by the narrowest of margins. In that first collection we had some high tension drama with some well known characters; Batman,Robin,Nightwing,Azrael,Catwoman and Commisioner Gordon. This second episode picks up where the last finished off. Gotham has seemingly survived the threat of anhilation from The Clench. Most things are back to normal...........when we discover the virus has merely gone into a regressive state due to the anti-virals Azrael obtained, and that the virus is now back, in an even more deadly form! And that means that Robin is at risk again......... The plot to this graphic novel involves almost all the same characters. Batman, Nightwing, Robin, the Huntress, with a few more thrown into the mix. These characters are Ra's Al Ghul and Bane(from the Knightfall trilogy, and the guy who broke Bruce Wayne/Batman). We find that Ra's Al Ghul is trying to obtain the virus and unleash it on an unsuspecting world, whilst the Dark Knight Detective and his helpers pursue him. We visit the Middle East, Paris, Edinburgh and obviously Gotham throughout the pages of this sequel. In writing this review i am a little bit torn. I really wanted to like it, but felt that it didn't live up to Contagion, and even that book didn't always reach dizzying heights. Part of the problem for me is the plot. I just didn't buy into the virus lying dormant in the body, and then coming back even worse than ever. The plot line with Ra's Al Ghul had potential, but i believe that if he was properly in character, he would have tried to have destroy Batman rather than try to spread the virus in far flung locations. The chase sequences in Paris and Edinburgh were a bit far-fetched too. For me, this book didn't have enough strategy and detective work, and this i one aspect i really like to see in a Batman graphic novel - intelligence and some deeper thought behind the scenes. But by far the weakest point of the whole graphic novel is Bane. A great character, a strong character and ultimately, the character who beat Batman. And yet, he is criminally underused. When he appears it is like abolt from the blue and you think ' This is going to up the ante now!' but it doesn't. Bane is really shallow, and not even a threat to Batman. It sounds like i hate this book, but i don't. Quite a lot of the artwork is very good (though some is really quite poor), and the virus idea is a good one too. It just feels like this was rushed out, and had some good ideas, but not the time to develop them into something that really grabbed you, visually or emotionally. There are much better Batman graphic novels out there, and although this particular one is quite rare, i would buy other ones before spending my money on this. However, if you are a Batman fanatic then you will want this in your collection (i did!).
So buy this if you are a lifelong fan, or a completist, but if you are coming to Batman for the first time, or after watching one of the movies, then there are other, better graphic novels to start out with.
Sorry!
