4 out of 5 stars Essential   May 4, 2001

Lonely Planet's domination on the GuideBook shelves is portrayed superbly in this new edition. Having just spent 6 weeks roaming the West of Europe, this book proved to be an invaluable source of information throughtout my travels. It's detailed maps are helpful, as is their objective view on each country. The hostal reviews were generally spot-on, and the editor's decision to give Birmingham no map was just a pleasure to see!! The book would have been given 5 stars but for its section on Rome. This was the only disappointment due to the distinct lack of hostels reviewed. Incidentially, if you do find yourself in Rome, go to 'Freedom Traveller' on Via Gaeta, a very clean, friendly hostel. Well done Lonely Planet on another excellent book to guide us through the unknown, and of course, to make us blatently look like tourists!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read with a good background of information....   January 11, 2001

I'm the type of person who wants to know what I'm looking at, but not to be flooded over with information so that I'm bored of reading. This book gives a good amount of information to the reader, enough to absorb what they're looking at, and then later if, the reader wants to know more about what they've seen, they can pursue that on they're own time. This is excellent to carry around and read while waiting on the train or airplane. Although it is what I call a "badge of tourism" (a dead give-away that you aren't a local) I still think it's something most people should buy before a trip to Europe.
