1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book   June 14, 2007

I am usually very impressed with Lonely Planet guides, having used the full length Australia and New Zealand guides and the Best of Hong Kong owhich are all fantastic, but this book is incredibly disappointing.

The guide is hugely out of date; I used this when in New York in May 2007 and half of the places to stay and eat which were recommended were no longer open. The hostel I stayed in (Bowery White House Hotel), which is at top place in the guide, was rubbish and nothing like it's discription. Virginia Otis who wrote this book frankly sounds like she's never been to this, or any other hostel, in New York. She also writes in a hugely patronising way which is unnecessary in this type of guide. The only saving grace of this book are the maps, which cannot be faulted, but lets be honest you can find maps of this quality all over New York.

DO NOT buy this book, I would instead recommend using one of the Time Out guides which are much more up to date.

4 out of 5 stars Pocket sized and straight to the point   July 27, 2006

I bought this book for my 3rd trip to New York - since I kind of know my way around now, I wanted a quick guide to point me in the right direction of good places to eat, shop and visit and update me on what had changed in the 4 years since I've been. It ticked all the boxes and was clear, concise and written by someone who knows NYC well. As a reference guide, this hits the mark. If you haven't visited before though, go for the Lonely Planet New York in-depth guide.
