My partner borrowed this and "Rough Guide to California". Look up that book - 100 times better than this and I am a Lonely Planet fan (South East Asia on a Shoe String, Oz, New Zealand, South America on a Shoe String).

We travelled from LA to San Francisco to Vegas via all the main sites. We found little practical information in this book (considering its purpose) - for example, there is half a page dedicated to what to do if you see a celebrity in LA and about the same on the southern LA coast and places to see there.

Other areas it lacked were suggested routes around, itineraries, history, places to stay and eat (I don't rely on these books but they are often a good starting point when you don't have the internet with you) and generally all the bits and pieces you need to get the most out of the area.

To me this book felt like a bit of homework I did when I was a student -a rushed and not well thought out piece of work with little research. We always had to refer to the Rough Guide for more in depth information after looking at this book.

On the plus side though the Lonely Planet style makes for easy use, the maps are as good as the Rough Guide and the West Coast Americans are a friendly bunch who give a much better insight and advice anyway!
