Funny, engaging and enchanting with fabulous characterisation, recommended! April 6, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
First and foremost this is a very well written book. The characterisation is superb, and the way the author describes the way that she slowly gets drawn into rural Mallorcan life is nothing short of enchanting.
However perhaps the most accomplished part of the book is the way that the author views her other life in the PR business in London.
As someone who loves to read the stories of people who have moved to rural Spain and Mallorca it is this flitting back and forth between the author's previous life in London and new life in Mallorca that makes the book both unique and captivating.
Highly recommended.
Un gran exito! January 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a vey nice book about the island where I am growing up and I am happy that senora Nicholas says many kind thing about the Mallorcan people. We have many tourists but in the countryside it is very different-beautiful scenery and fantastic local customs and fiestas. I also like to practise my English so this book was good for this too! I like her describing our foods and way of life that is calm and simple. This is about the real Mallorcan people. Es un libro especial..enhorabuena senora Nicholas!
Very funny and inspirational January 4, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
It is such a pleasure to come across a little gem of a book like this which gives such beautiful descriptions of the island of Mallorca in the Spanish Balearics. At the same time the author spins a wonderfully entertaining story about her family's relocation to the rural hills of the island from central London where she ran a glitzy PR agency. It is very, very funny and witty as well as giving a wry slant on hectic London life and also the peaceful, enriching 'other' existence the author discovers in Mallorca. Very enjoyable and a great insight into Mallorca's traditional way of life in the rural communities from the perspective of an erstwhile London girl.
A tempting prospect! November 20, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
It was great to read a book showing that living between two countries requires sheer grit and isn't all fun. For some, like the author, it's the only option if you want to snatch at a slice of potential paradise. She does it with humour by the bucketful and verve but I'm not sure if I'd be up to all those commuter flights and having to drag myself away from beautiful mountains and an idyllic, near bubolic existence to earn a crust back in grimy old London. The author is, I think, in transition knowing that in order to live the dream she must put in some hard graft first. Good for her! I hope we'll find out in a sequel what happens to her entertaining and lovable family and Mallorcan friends next.
A wonderfully witty, uplifting, and touching tale November 3, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I rarely buy books by those who've upped sticks and left British shores for greener pastures-they're all the same, pretty anodyne- but a friend who knows of my love of Spain, urged me to make this an exception. I'm glad she persuaded me because this is a little gem. It's wickedly funny about pretentious London luvvies in the media world and scrupulously fair and genuinely absorbing about life in rural Mallorca. I loved the beautiful lyrical descriptions of the changing seasons and the traditions and customs of local rural Mallorcans. It was a delight to read and difficult to put down. The author is self knocking and dollops much irony on her own erstwhile existence and friends and colleagues. This is her road to personal enlightentment. Oh that we all had the get up and go and fearlessness to follow in canny Ms Nicholas's footsteps!
