Try something different! April 9, 2007 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book gives a good over-view of most Europian countries and all their major cities. It is easy to read and gives well balanced reviews. However the book fails to go into a great deal of depth on any places the author didn't seem to like. For instance, the great Moroccan city of Casablanca merited I one line put-down. The lay-out is poorly designed, with country chapters and city reviews crashing together making the over-all read a difficult prospect. To be honest there isn't much within this book to be dedicated directly to rail travellers, there are a few little tips, but by and large you'll get more useful information (and a more readable book) from a Lonely Planet guidebook. Happy travelling!
The perfect travel companion April 7, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Striking a balance between the bare essentials and information overload, this book provides just the right amount of information to get you on your feet when you arrive to a new place. Obviously you've got all the usual practical stuff like train stations, tourist information offices accommodation and transport info etc, plus some handy hints on nightlife, eating out and sightseeing. The book provides you with enough suggestions to make you feel like you have a choice without causing indecisiveness. I particularly like the way it offers a "where to next?" section after most major destinations - perfect for the backpacker. In addition to this, the book provides 3-stop routes that can be tackled in 10-day holidays, for example Munich-Innsbruck-Vienna. The book also contains enough glossy pictures to keep most people happy, whilst still allowing some thought to the imagination.
