I like my toast done on one side.... January 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this book to be an excellent tool when I first landed on this side of the pond - the colour maps in the back in particular I found very helpful. I still dust it off now and then. Recommended.
This guide has it all December 23, 2003 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Again, the first reviewer seem to have been reading a different book to the one I used. Firstly the book is very well written (rather than being merely functional) and also very informative. It contains contained a lot of useful backgound information on the history of DC which makes visiting the sights much more meaningful. The maps were also very good - both the colour maps at the back and the detailed maps in the text.Often when I've visited a city I've felt that I needed extra information which wasn't in the guidebook, but this guide really did "have it all".
Invaluable, up-to-date - my DC bible! October 29, 2003 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I don't know what the previous reviewer was on about! I have just returned from a trip to DC and thought this book was excellent. There IS a separate colour map section at the back (which was v. useful) and I loved the 25 things not to miss (although I didn't have time to do them all - I'll just have to go back!). I guess it depends what you are interested in - but surely history is kind of the point of visiting Washington DC - all those museums and monuments are there for a reason!! This book is also GREAT on eating out - Jules Brown must share my love of food and DC has some FANTASTIC restaurants: thank you so much for pointing me in their direction.
Pompous, Confusing, Disappointing. September 30, 1999 2 out of 9 found this review helpful
Impressive coverage of all the museums and monuments. Excessive coverage of US history and politics. Some essential travelling basics omitted [e.g. where can you store luggage?] or just lost in the infathomable "chapter" structure. And, most annoyingly, the maps are printed on the same paper as the text, scattered throughout the guide and consequently difficult to find and use. Some of the information is out of date but I guess thats unavoidable in any travel guide. Disappointingly not up to the usual Rough Guide standards: the excellent Rough Guides to New York and Edinburgh are both inspiring and informative.
