Detailed, well-written, meticulously researched book June 5, 2008 "Once upon a time you dressed so fine............"
Unlike the reviews of the Rolling Stones Beggars Banquet Lengendary Sessions book, the bulk of this book IS about the actual recording of the seminal Highway 61 Revisted album. I am pleased to say that the author, Colin Irwin, knows what he's talking about. This book does everything you expect, and more. And, for those who have seen the brilliant film "I'm Not There", this book provides a wealth of background info that makes that film even more enjoyable (you find out where some the quotes/dialogue from the movie come from).
This nook is great because it starts off by setting the historical and social context, and Dylan's musical and biographical context, that led to the creation of a masterpiece. As for the vast sections about the recording of the album itself, the book really gives you a sense of what it was like to be there, and in some sense, you are actually going on a journey with those musicians; only, you know where they ended up, the fascinating part is how they got there.
And yet, this book is not out to de-mystify (or de-mythitify) the album and the legends that have grown up around it - which is a good thing. Each song, and its recording furing the sessions, is analysed in quite a bit of detail, with some of the more obscure references helpfully illuminated.
But most of all, you get a very clear picture of a young, driven Dylan, going hell-for-leather down his own musical road that was Highway 61 Revisited and unbeknowingly changing the face of contemporary music forever. Reading this book makes you go back and listen to the album (as I confess I have done) and appreciate it the more because you know the story behind each track - you appreciate, for example, Charley McCoy's fingerpicking guitar on Desolation Row more because you know he just happened to be coming up to the studio (to pick up some tickets from producer Bob Johnson) and was asked to play on the track and literally had a guitar thrust into his hands - and him, Dylan and bass player Russ Savakus nailed it in two takes.
These things, and many more, too many to write here, only enhance what is already the terrific eccletic experience of listening to Highway 61 Revisited. If you think the album is great, it just becomes greater when you know its story. And if you're not familiar with the album, and want a way in to its labyrinth, there's no better place to start, or book to guide you. So, grab this book, put on the album (on vinyl preferably!), sit back and enjoy.
