Amazon.co.uk Review Generalising about a continent as varied as Latin America is a dangerous thing to do. Once you realise that the same word--guagua--means "baby" in Chile and "bus" in Mexico, you begin to see how diverse the Latin American states really are. Nevertheless, many visitors to the Americas try to combine several countries together, and this new book appeals to first-time visitors who are still in the planning stages of their trip. If you are unsure whether it is Bolivia, Brazil, Belize or Costa Rica that provides the sort of thing that you are looking for, this book will help you to decide. Beginning with an exhaustive introduction to planning your trip and ensuring that it is a success, the book then provides a very brief guide to each country, detailing the highlights. Once you have taken this on board, you will be ready to plan your first Latin American trip. Most of the information is detailed and accurate (although people may struggle to survive on 25 US dollars a day in Uruguay). The book will not be of much use to seasoned travellers or to people who are actually on the ground, but it does provide useful pointers to those who want to go to Latin America but do not know where to start. Once it has been digested, the South American Handbook or the Mexico & Central America Handbook--the best overall guides to the continent--should be the next ports of call. --Toby Green

This is not a guide book! March 1, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
So ignore the other guys advice. This is a planning book, designed to summarise where is best to go in each country and when. That's why it's called Read this first! It is really good for if you want to go away at a certain time of year and don't know where to go or are deciding between places. Also let's you know how much you can cram into the time you have off. However once you've decided where to go, it's best to buy one of the official guide books
spend the money on a real guide book May 28, 2002 10 out of 14 found this review helpful
complete waste of time and money. Wish id looked at the content in more detail before buying. i actually went through in disbelief at the scarcity of contents, compared with my other guide books and realised its exactly the same information which gets condensed into the front of other guide books. lots of common sense information, only of use to someone who really wouldnt even know the first thing about travelling. this was the least useful resource in planning a trip to latin amrica, to the degree theres actually a lot of bad advice. Avoid
Which South American country? This will help you decide. July 10, 2001 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
A huge country ranging from tropical to glacial conditions and everything in between. With suggested itineries depending on your time constraints, I don't know whether I would have chosen the right time to go, let alone the right place for me! A must to help you decide.
