4 out of 5 stars A thought-provoking and entertaining read   July 10, 2008

This book is a pleasure to read. Always well written, frequently thought-provoking and packed with "fact is stranger than fiction" accounts of day to day life in Nepal. The reader enjoys for themselves Jane's good humour and amusement at the events she relates in sometimes poetic English.
There is a constant justaposition of two world's; Cambridge "Blighty" and remote Nepal, with the recurring backdrop of the meaning of the quality of life. This is brought in to sharp focus with the agonizingly slow development of Jane and Simon's disabled son.
Covering such a range of true stories, this book deals with an ambitious range of topics seamlessly.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and inspiring   June 30, 2008

This book is beautifully written with rich and vivid language telling a deeply thought provoking story of very exciting but difficult times, without once straying into melancholy or complaint. It is always optimistic and is full of the joy of life in all its diversity. It's a very long time since I've read a book that has so gripped and inspired me. It's an effortless and delightful read. I'm off to book my flights to Nepal....

5 out of 5 stars An engaging read   June 26, 2008

Jane Wilson-Howarth has written an extremely moving and entertaining account of living in Nepal with her family. Anyone who has ever visited Nepal will instantly recognise the author's excellent and often highly humorous portrayal of this fascinating country with its unique culture and people.
This book is enjoyable to read and contains a wealth of detail. As well as being intensely personal, concerning the life of her disabled son, David, the work also offers a window into both another world, far removed from the one that most of us live in, and a view into the life of an ordinary family undergoing an extraordinary journey.
I would recommend this excellently written and engaging book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and very moving   May 8, 2008

I enjoyed this book and I think the excellent reviews it has received are well deserved. I found it very absorbing and very moving. It is beautifully written, and it really brings to life Jane's time living in Nepal and the joys and pains of caring for her disabled son, David, while at the same time she and her husband were also trying to give both their sons the best possible experience of the country. Well worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars A beautifully written and important story   March 6, 2008

This a beautifully written account of one family's attempt to make sense of their son's life. David was born with multiple congenital abnormalities. Instead of submitting to endless medical interventions, Jane, who is herself a doctor, returned with her husband Simon and their eldest son Alexander to their life in rural Nepal. The result was that new life that was breathed into David who was able to live out his short life to the full. It is a incredibly important that this story is heard by medical and lay people alike
