4 out of 5 stars Decent book for France campsites   October 13, 2008
I'm not sure why this book has received such terrible reviews, it's certainly not bad at all.

Yes, it's in French a bit, however the majority of the book deals in symbols, and there are English translations of the symbols, so it's universally understandable. Also, if your French isn't up to understanding the few words contained here, or if you can't use a French dictionary, I'd suggest you'll have trouble filling up with petrol at a French village service station, or staying clear of cheval at a restaurant, for example.

We used the Michelin guide 10 years ago for France, and it was invaluable then. This one is similar in the information it contains, and the number of sites it lists. One especially useful feature is the description of a site as peaceful or not. I was also pleased to find website addresses for most sites, so you can compile a short list of sites before leaving home, very useful. Directions are good enough to get you to the correct town, from where there are usually signposts. Also, most of the more popular towns / areas have their own very detailed map, so you can poinpoint exactly where your site is.

There are a couple of disappointing features though.

First of all the book is divided into regions then departements, where it used to be just regionalised. This can make it hard to find the site you want, you really do need to know which departement it's in. There is a map at the start of each region though to help you determine this.

Secondly, there are a few decent municipal sites we've been at that aren't contained in the book. I'm not sure why, they are good enough sites, very convenient for overnight stops. Perhaps it's not as comprehensive a guide as it used to be ?

That said, if you want to tour France using unplanned routes, or want to compare the sites in different towns and departements, or just simply want to browse, then this will do the job very well.

1 out of 5 stars Difficult to understand   September 6, 2008

I was lead to believe that Mitchelin has a good name for guide books, however, this book proved me very wrong. For a start it is in French, although there are 3 pages of English - French translation, this does not inculde all of the words used in the book. This also makes reading the entries very difficult.
The map references are not related to the map provided in the book, therefore are useless.
It is also quite complicated to use.
I would not recommend this book, I am now going to buy the more reliable AA one.

3 out of 5 stars Useful   July 14, 2008

I have to disagree with the reviews given to this guide. It is extremely useful as a back-up in conjunction with the Michelin road atlas when touring. O.k. the sites listed aren't always the type of site you would necessarily spend more than a night or two on, ( although many are ), but it does vet. the sites and gives them a rating as a guide to general standard, and packs plenty of other info. into a small space. It also lists a hell of a lot of sites, so if you are touring using the Michelin road atlas and you need to stop for the night, the atlas indicates, with a symbol, which towns or villages have one or more campsites listed in the camping guide.Find the nearest one on the map, look it up in the guide, and Bob's your proverbial. As for not being able to find the sites, I can't really see a problem. You are usualy given a direction from the named town or village, a road number, and an indication of distance. The rest is up to you.

1 out of 5 stars Not up to the job.   July 7, 2008

Avoid - I'd give it a zero rating if this were possible. This book does have a fairly comprehensive list of campsites throughout France. However, there is NO ADDRESS INFORMATION FOR INDIVIDUAL CAMPSITES, not even postal codes, just rough directions along roads from nearby towns and the telephone number of the nearest tourist office to each site but not the site itself). Oh, it does give you the sites website - very useful when on the road!! Pathetic!

1 out of 5 stars very poor   June 25, 2008

very poor book, not a thing i was looking for, maybe if you know how to use it than yes. I could not grasp the idea. Waste of money really. Could give my away for just p&p if anyone wants it. Could not find a single place using this book, if you have sat nav, download french camping pois and go with that. cheaper and much better.
