Breathtaking - will stir you into action in no time! August 16, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Having watched the second series of this before the first, I really wanted to get my hands on this DVD. It contains less walks, but also has more information on the very person these walks are dedicated to - Alfred Wainwright. Having climbed three of these fells (not many, I know, but I'm working on it) myself, I can appreciate what a mammoth task it must have been to simply climb all 214 of them. But then to undertake the job of documenting them for the enjoyment of others, it's absolutely amazing. The Lakes are a beautiful part of the world, and it's great that these DVD's have been put together to hopefully inspire people to get of their bottoms and out into the hills.
It's certainly had that effect on me. Although I've climbed three of the relatively unknown fells, I can still vouch for the fact that they're a wonderful place to be, and despite the fact they're hard work (especially if your fitness level is as poor as mine), peak-bagging is addictive. I have myself printed off a list of thr 214 fells, and intend to get them all ticked off in time - with the largest, Scafell Pike being the real prize. It's covered on this DVD, and from the footage, you can tell it is no easy feat. It took Julia Bradbury and her film crew about 7 hours to reach the top of Scafell Pike! Daunting indeed.
If you're a keen walker, chances are you'll have seen this already. If not, you should. If you're not familiar with the Lakes, it'll make you want to be, and if you are, it's a lovely way to reminisce about where you've already been. And no doubt you'll want to go again! A beautifully produced series, with stunning aerial footage and interesting background information. Recommended.
Get Your Boots On January 28, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I missed the TV shows but am now glad I own the DVDs which are very enjoyable, perhaps because like AW's books were intended, it is a way to enjoy the experience when you are unable to be there. I am looking forward to the next holiday in the Lake District even more now. I'm not sure whether our party will want to tackle Striding Edge, or even Scafell Pike, but Haystacks and Castle Cragg look achievable. I will take this DVD and part 2 and have a refresher before a climb.
The dramatisation of AW's life and incredible obsession is long, interesting and enjoyable assuming you have had your interest in him raised by watching these programs and reading the books.
Wainwrights walks January 19, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This series is very good and have watched a lot of these which are often repeated on BBC4. The aerial photograpy is beautifully matched to stirring classical music and if this doesn't get people out of their arm chairs then nothing will! I agree with the previous review about the assumption that people have all the necessary equipment whilst out on the walks. As I write this review (Jan 08) am aware that their has already this year been a number of fatalities on Blencathra and Helvellyn. Don't let that put you off though! just wanted to put some 'balance' as to what the TV series portrays and the unfortunate reality for a small number of people. Hope there are more of these Wainwrights Walk series, It is a rare gem that is worth watching alone just for a bit of 'Escapism'.
Fun in the fells. June 24, 2007 54 out of 54 found this review helpful
An enjoyable inducement to leave your armchair and head for the hills. The programme makers wisely make the tacit assumption that the inspired viewer who wants to walk up Haystacks, Castle Crag, Blencathra or Scafell Pike after watching these shows is sensible enough to take all the usual precautions - the appropriate clothing, the map, the Kendal Mint Cake! These programmes are about the challenge and the pleasure of trolling about in the fells - well done to all involved.
