1 out of 5 stars Amusing but useless   February 15, 2007

In writing "Tied Inn" Tony Upsall has given us a brief insight into his own mundane, colourless, and evidently unsuccessful forays in the pub industry. Too brief to be useful to anyone interested in entering this field, and with no solid information to guide would be owners or landlords, and like a joke taking too long to be told it comes across as a second rate essay with amusing moments but ultimately failing to deliver any punchline.

4 out of 5 stars A 'warts and all' insight into pub management   December 20, 2006

This book provides real insight to the pub trade. Although quite short (I read it all in about 90 mins) it does help portray actual life as a publican. Tony Upsall has spent most of his working life within in the brewing industry and running various pubs and provides an honest view of what to expect running a typical hostelry. He gives an overview of the common pitfalls and how to avoid or overcome them, paints a realistic picture of daily life and helps expel some myths and misconceptions. The book is written in an informal manner which makes it easy and enjoyable to read. Most topics are covered including cash flow, licensing and the law, food, etc. Each topic provides just enough material to be useful, though some would benefit from going into greater detail. The book was first published in 1993 and as such a couple of areas do show there age, but everything is still relevant. This is definitely worth considering if you are considering taking your first step into pub management.
