3 out of 5 stars Good for end-users but not really a book for techies   February 26, 2008

This book is really centred on the home user and the new features in Vista from a `how to use' them perspective, it is very light on the detail that a sysadmin is after and consequently I was a bit disappointed. That's not to say it's a bad book but if you are a sysadmin and want update your existing knowledge of Windows I would recommend "Administering Vista Security" by Mark Minasi.

5 out of 5 stars Versatile good all round book   November 25, 2007

I have to admit this book surprised me, I thought when I first picked it up the book was aimed mainly at a non technical audience. However I was surprised and pleased to see that there is information there not just for the newbie but also for the experienced IT person. The book is nicely written, easy to read and uses a language that people at all technical levels will be able to get something out of it.
The topics this book covers will assist both the home user and the IT support technician. I would have no problem recommending it to my 60 year old Father who has just purchased Vista for his PC at home or to the desktop support team within the company I work for.

5 out of 5 stars The right level   November 19, 2007

I work in IT and this book was recommended by associates. Having read various books they tend to fall into two catagories; the author confusing you in the rush to show off how much they know or so basic they tell you which button to press but not why.
This book is truly for prof by prof. Clear without boredom, explainations without ego. Thank you. Vista is less painful with this book on my desk.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the "Missing Manual"   November 18, 2007

I purchased a copy of the Windows XP The Missing Manual when I first installed Windows XP. Although this was fine, the manual provided only the basics.
However, when I upgraded to Vista, I wanted a book that built upon my knowledge and did not assume that I was a beginner.
Authors Campbell and Hassell have given me exactly what I want in Windows Vista Beyond the Manual.
Great coverage of all new interface features, detailed coverage of all aspects of security and excellent coverage of multi-media aspects.
I particularly enjoyed the chapter introducing me to Media Center.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars Great Vista companion   November 17, 2007

I was reluctant to leave the safety zone of Windows XP, but needed to upgrade my PC so was faced with a new PC with Windows Vista installed.
After advice from a work collegue, I bought this book. The book is well written and easy to follow. I use my PC for mainly multimedia purposes, photo's, music/video and the internet. This book is a great help for all of these. I also found out more about the new features Vista has to offer and much more besides. Great Vista companion.
