Excellent critical resource July 12, 2006

This book represents something quite new and exciting about the study of qigong and the eastern spiritual technologies generally.
Here we have western practitioners who use historical/sociological/medical analysis to understand the origins and development of Daoist body cultivation techniques.
This sort of exercise can degenerate into westerners bashing easterners as incredulous and superstitious, but this does not happen here as the contributors have experienced the benefits of the various cultivation techniques through years of practice.
This is not a book where you can learn techniques; it is more for those (like myself) who have read and practiced widely and are often baffled and overwhelmed by the sheer diversity/contradictions found in qigong et al.
Perhaps the most revealing chapter was on qigong in America, for it revealed much of the hype and quasi-mysticism that has been used to market qigong in the US and western countries generally.
In all, an insightful book that shows that while we should show deference to the historical teachers, qigong needs to be continually assessed and developed to meet changing human needs - as indeed did the earlier teachers do with the techniques they inherited.
