A very good introduction to mobile satcom and S-PCN. May 4, 2001

The book is written in 3 sections. Section 1 gives a good introduction to satellite communications with the emphasis on mobile satcom. Section 2 gets into the heart of mobile satcom, S-PCN, and satellite networks and gives a comprehensive overview of the technical and regulatory issues. Section 3 deals with broadband systems. It starts with a rather lightweight introduction to the protocols, but soon gets into gear and delivers a good review of the issues of ATM and TCP/IP over satellite. The appendices add depth to Section 2, and summarise the existing or planned constellations. Overall a very good book which complements the fixed satcom focus of classics like "Maral and Bousquet". This book deserves a place on the bookshelf of any engineer with a serious interest in satellite communications.
